Long Form 1

Short Form 1, Long 1, Short 2, and Long 2 are basics forms--they teach basic principles, whereas the 3s and up are techniques forms.

Long Form 1 builds on Short Form 1 by focusing on the power principle of shifting from a neutral bow to a forward bow while reverse-punching after blocking.  Additionally, Long Form 1 introduces transition stances, strikes, hip rotation, and the first use of advancing and 45 degree angles.

First Part

This part is basically Short 1 with reverse punches after every block, as well as miscellaneous other moves.

  1. From attention stance step with your left foot to 9:00 into a horse stance while you place your left palm over your right fist in front of your chest ("warrior" and "scholar"). This is the form salutation.
  1. Step back with your left foot into a right neutral bow while at the same time executing an inner block with your right hand toward 12:00 and chambering your left. (Make sure you block while you step--not after.)
  2. As soon as you have planted into your neutral bow, pivot into a right forward bow while delivering a left reverse punch (straight punch to the upper chest), chambering your right hand.
  3. Retreat with your right foot toward a left neutral bow, but stopping midway in a left forward cat stance (right leg in front) while executing a right inner block toward 12:00 and chambering your left hand.
  4. Continue moving your right foot backward into a left neutral bow while executing a left inner block.
  5. Pivot into a left forward bow while delivering a right reverse punch, chambering your left hand.
  1. As in Short 1, cover to 9:00 into a left neutral bow while executing a double-factored left outer block.
  2. Pivot into a left forward bow while delivering a right reverse punch, chambering your left hand.
  3. Retreat with your left foot into a right neutral bow while delivering a double-factored right outer block.
  4. Pivot into a right forward bow while delivering a left reverse punch, chambering your right hand.
  1. As in Short 1, cover to 3:00 into a left neutral bow, but as you cover, deliver a left elbow to (your imaginary opponent at) 3:00, followed by a left downward backfist, finishing with a left upper block.
  2. Pivot into a left forward bow while delivering a right reverse punch, chambering your left hand.
  3. Retreat with your left foot into a right neutral bow while delivering a double-factored right upward block.
  4. Pivot into a right forward bow while delivering a left reverse punch, chambering your right hand.
  1. Unlike in Short 1, instead of covering again, we will advance into the downward block.   Bring the right foot back into a cat while cocking your right hand to your left shoulder (and moving your left hand across your waist) in preparation for a right downward block.  Without pausing, step with your right foot toward 6:00 into a right neutral bow while finishing your right downward block.
  2. Pivot into a right forward bow while delivering a left reverse punch, chambering your right hand.
  3. Retreat with your right foot into a left neutral bow while delivering a double-factored left downward block.
  4. Pivot into a left forward bow while delivering a right reverse punch, chambering your left hand.

Second Part

This second part repeats the basic movements of Short 1 but introduces repetitive blocks while remaining in a neutral bow.

  1. Pivot into a left neutral bow (still facing 6:00) while executing a left inner block followed by a right inner block, and then another left inner block.  Your upper body should rotate between the blocks but your lower body should remain in the neutral bow.
  2. Retreat with your left leg into a right neutral bow while executing a right inner block followed by a left, then right inner again.
  1. Cover (with your left leg) into a right neutral bow facing 9:00 while executing a double-factored right outer block followed by double factored left then right outer blocks.
  2. Retreat (with your right leg) into a left neutral bow while executing a double-factored left outer block followed by double-factored right then left outer blocks.
  1. Cover (with your left leg) into a right neutral bow facing 3:00 while executing a right upper block followed by double-factored left then right upper blocks.
  2. Retreat (with your right leg) into a left neutral bow while executing a double-factored left upper block followed by double-factored right then left upper blocks.
  1. Cover (not advance) with your right leg into a left neutral bow facing 12:00 while executing a left downward block followed by a right then a left downward block.
  2. Retreat (with your left leg) into a right neutral bow while executing a right downward block followed by a left downward then a right downward block.

Third Part

Long 1 ends with an isolation set from a horse stance. A new set of strikes is introduced.

  1. Step forward with your right leg into a horse stance still facing 12:00. As you do so, chamber your right fist and execute a left, palm-down inner fist (swinging across your body at about groin level). Chamber that hand while you execute the same strike with your right hand. Then cock your right fist above your head while you execute another with your left.
  2. Cock your left fist above your head while you execute a right, palm-up inner fist (again at groin level). Cock that while executing the same with your left hand. Chamber your left hand as you execute one more with the right.
  3. Execute a left push-block while chambering your right hand, followed by a right and then another left push-block.
  4. Straight right punch to 12:00 while you chamber your left; then a straight left while you chamber your right.
  5. Straight right punch to 10:30 (rotating your hips) while you chamber your left; then a straight left to 1:30 while you chamber your right.
  6. Straight right punch to 9:00 while you chamber your left; then a straight left to 3:00 while you chamber your right.
  7. Right uppercut to 12:00 while you chamber your left; then left uppercut.
  8. Open your left fist and place your right fist into your left palm as your final salutation.
  9. (Feet together, hands at side, and bow to complete.)

Principles of Long Form 1

(retreating with blocks, strikes, and stance changes)

Front hand by itself uses neutral
Rear hand by itself uses forward
Walking from forward to neutral
Stop cat and show as transition stance with extra block
Inward block is only single block--closes center line
Inward block is minor move for other blocks--open center line
Rear heel always down for beginners
Out/up transition uses neutral, neutral, forward with elbow, back fist, rising
Sets line of travel for power
In the 1s and 2s--difference in 1st downward block:
1s--Short 1 is  away, Long 1 is  in
2s--Short is in, Long 2 is away
Uses "V" and "L" moving into an opponent
Closes center line and allows choice of angle of entry
All katas based on in/out/up/down blocks
After last down block and punch are completed, repeat sequence and add something new
2nd half of kata is "left" side of Short 1 with rear hand block
When blocking from rear hand, upper body turns 45 degrees and lower body stays in neutral bow
Reach is not necessary when blocking from rear hand
At end of second in/out/up/down sequence, show new material
Inside downward palm down, inside downward palm up (requires high cock position), push down
45 degree punch points to first new angle of katas
End with three upper cuts
